Apresentando-me, o meu nome é André Ferreira Monteiro, e sou um entusiasta da nossa literatura nacional (da literatura em geral, na realidade). Uma das minhas paixões é promover um pouco mais clássicos esquecidos da nossa literatura, que já foram de uma forma ou outra usados para a "formação" dos mais jovens. Como forma mais dinâmica e pro-activa para este fim, decidi auto-desafiar-me com este blogue como desafio, em que pretendo, ao longo de um ano a partir de amanhã, 28 de Dezembro de 2014, até 28 de Dezembro de 2015, escrever uma publicação sobre um livro clássico que por uma razão ou outra pode ser considerado "infanto-juvenil" (por vezes devendo ser discutido porquê a sua inclusão), fazendo uma descrição do seu enredo (sem spoilers!, não se preocupem) e uma análise do texto e possível sub-texto do clássico, relacionando-o por vezes com a vida e pessoa do seu autor. Visto que, por disponibilidades da vida pessoal seria mais que provavelmente impossível fazer um todos os dias, assim reduzo isto a um dia por semana, dependendo o dia em causa das disponibilidades de horário. Ora tendo um ano 365 dias, dividindo 365 por semanas de 7 dias, isto dá o número acima referido, 52,1428571, que podemos arredondar para 52, sendo que 'cobrirei' livros (normalmente um por publicação, eventualmente mais se forem relativamente curtos) no mesmo número de publicações do blogue e mais um de 'bónus', devido à esta semana cair simultaneamente em dois anos.
Dos livros aqui incluídos, alguns são incluídos frequentemente em colecções de literatura para jovens, outros estão hoje esquecidos ou nunca foram incluídos em colecções deste género, mas têm as suas razões para a sua inclusão aqui. Uma das principais razões para algumas das inclusões por mim decididas para aqui, é acima de tudo a de demonstrar que a literatura portuguesa (juvenil ou não) tocou em temas que por vezes parece que foram tocados somente pela literatura "lá fora", como a ficção científica, fantasia infanto-juvenil/infantil, de aventuras, policial e afins. Essencialmente, estas escolhas foram feitas para dar conhecimento e acesso a obras repletas de aventuras, dramas e mistério que encantem o jovem leitor (e mesmo muitos dos outros leitores mais velhos). Se o blogue tiver algum sucesso, este poderá ser repetido mais um ano nos mesmos moldes. Esta iniciativa é mais uma ideia entre muitas que desde o final do século passado têm vindo a ser pensadas, para impulso de uma educação com uma abordagem não puramente tecnicista, e em que o passado seja conhecido e inserido no presente, confrontado porém como passado não mais perfeito que o presente, e com várias coisas já irremediavelmente ultrapassadas. Como parte dessa honestidade intelectual, para não dar 'falsas imagens' dos livros em causa (como muitas vezes as introduções aos clássicos dão, dando ideias erradas do comprimento do texto ou até dos eventos do enredo para não ferir susceptibilidades juvenis ou de adultos 'policiadores' dos 'consumos culturais' dos jovens), aqui referiremos os comprimentos das obras, a acessibilidade da linguagem e elementos do enredo que possam possivelmente ser mais difíceis de digerir (por isso mesmo tentaremos não escolher o máximo possível livros infanto-juvenis "duvidosos"). Algumas imagens serão também aqui incluídas, das capas e de eventuais ilustrações, para aumentar o eventual interesse de leitores do blogue que possam estar interessados em ler os livros aqui referidos. Aqueles que são mais raros e difíceis de encontrar hoje terão alguns locais de acesso referidos e eventuais possíveis locais ou negócios acessíveis para venda referidos.
Por este blogue passarão estórias que vão da adaptação de As Minas do Rei Salomão de Eça de Queirós (as razões para incluir aqui este livro como não sendo só 'mera' tradução serão explicadas na publicação respectiva), o poema herói-cómico O Híssope de António Dinis da Cruz e Silva, a As Pupilas do Senhor Reitor de Júlio Dinis, a Aventuras de Basílio Fernandes Enxertado de Camilo Castelo Branco, e muitos outros, de autores de todas as regiões do Portugal actual, e também naturais de ex-colónias durante o período colonial das suas pátrias, gente de todos os tipos de backgrounds sócio-culturais e correntes literárias, a maior parte deles sendo autores respeitáveis e prestigiados hoje em dia. Também, conforme vá sendo possível, pôr aqui no fundo dos artigos versões em Inglês (aviso que algumas grafias de nomes serão alteradas para 'simplificar' a leitura para Anglófonos que teriam problemas em ler algumas características da escrita do Português) dos mesmos textos aqui incluídos, para maior acessibilidade internacional a alguns curiosos externos.
Este não é só um labor de amor ou a que me dou por respeito ao eventual público receptor que poderá gostar deste 'passeio' pelo passado da nossa literatura para a infância e para jovens, é uma carta de amor de alguém que nasceu rodeado de livros, em que quase toda a família pelo menos sabia ler, e lê pelo menos em ocasiões, muito graças ao que restou dos tempos em que um tio paterno trabalhava na Companhia Editora do Minho (responsável por grande número de edições em Barcelos para a Editora Civilização), e que ainda hoje procura aceder a um 'tempo perdido' e umas 'oportunidades perdidas' da literatura portuguesa, pelos recantos deste país, e que me levou a esta investigação na área da literatura infanto-juvenil e juvenil, e na 'causa' de uma renovação do cânone da literatura portuguesa do género (a definição de um 'cânone luso' no modelo do cânone ocidental de Harold Bloom é algo que na verdade falta à literatura portuguesa adulta também, mas isso é questão para outro dia, ou melhor dizendo, outro tipo de blogue). Esta iniciativa não tem patrocinadores, pagamentos, nem planeia ser 'semente' de um livro, somente o partilhar de uma experiência de leitura e de encantamento do imaginário convosco, os eventuais leitores deste blogue. Seen that, do to availabilities of personal life it would be more than likely impossible to do one every day, so I reduce this to a day a week, depending the day at case on the availabilities of schedule. Now having a year 365 days dividing 365 for 7 day weeks, this give the above referred number, 52,142857, which we can round up to 52, being that I shall cover books (normally one a post, eventually more if they are relatively short) in the same number of blog posts plus one more 'bonus', due this week falling simultaneously in two years.
Out of the books here included, some are included frequently in collection of literature for young people, others are today forgotten or never were included in collections of this genre, but have their reasons for their inclusion here. One of the main reasons for some of the inclusions by me decided for here, is above all the one of demonstrating that Portuguese literature (young people's are not) touched on things that sometimes it seems that it were touched along by the literature "outside", like the science fiction, children's-young people's fantasy/children's fantasy, adventures', detective's and the like. Essentially, these choices were made to give knowledge and access to works filled of adventures, dramas and mystery that delight the young reader (and even many of the other older readers). If the blog has any success, This one may be repeated one more year in the same molds. This initiative is one more idea among many that since the ending of the last century have come to be thought-out, for the impulsing of an education with an approach not purely technicise, and in which the past is known and in certain in the present, face though as a past not more perfect than the present and with several things already irremediably irremediably out dated. As part of that intellectual honesty, for not giving 'false images' of the books in question (like many times the introduction to the classics give, giving wrong ideas of the length of the text or even of the events of the plot for not harming youthful susceptabilites or the ones of adults 'policing' of the 'cultural consumptions' of the young ones), here we shall refer the length of the works, the accessibility of the language and elements of the plot that may possibly be more difficult to digest (rightly because of that we shall try to not pick the most possible "doubtful" children's/young people's books). Some images shall be also here included, from the covers and of eventual illustrations, to increase the eventual interests of leaders of this blog that may be interested in reading the books here referred. Those which are rarer and more difficult to find todays shell have some places of excess referred and eventual possible places or businesses accessible for sale referred.
By this blog shall pass stories that go from the adaptation of King's Solomon's Mines by Essa de Queiroz (the reasons including here this book as not being just 'mere' translation shall be explained in the respected posts), the mock-heroic poem The Hyssop by Antonio Dinis da Cruz e Silva, to The Parson Rector's Lady-Pupils by Julio Dinis, to adventures of Basilio Enxertado by Camilo Castelo Branco, and many others, by authors of all the regions of the current Portugal, and also natives of the former-colony during the colonial. Of their fatherland, folk from all the times. Of social-cultural backgrounds and literary currents, the most part of them being respectable and prestige authors now a days. Also, according to how it goes being possible, to put here the bottom of the articles versions in English (I warn that some spellings of names shall be altered for 'simplifying' the reading for English-speakers that would have problems reading some features of the writing of Portuguese). From the same texts here included, for greater international accessibility to some external curious ones.
This one isn't just a labor of love of o which I give myself by respect to the eventual receiving audience that might enjoy this 'ride' thorough the past of Portuguese literature for childhood and for young people, is a love letter of someone who was born surrounded by books, in which almost all the family at least knew how to read and reads at least at occasion, much thanks to what was left of times in which a paternal uncle work in the Companhia Editora do Minho ("Minho Publishing Company", responsible for great number of editions in Barcelos for the Editora Civilização (, and who still today looks to have excess to a 'lost time' and some 'lost opportunities' of Portuguese literature, throughout corners of this country, what took me to this investigation in the area of children's/young people's and just young people's literature, and in the 'cause' of a renovation of the canon of the Portuguese literature of the genre (the definition of 'luso canon' in the model of the western canon of Harold Bloom is something that in truth likes to the Portuguese grown up literature also, But that is a manner for another day, or better put, another type of blog). This initiative doesn't have sponsors, payments, nor plans to be 'seed' to a book, Just the sharing of an experience of reading and of enchantment of the imaginarium with you, the eventual readers of this blog. If this blog gives a new impression of Portuguese literature, suggests to you readings to read before growing up or for children, nephew/nieces or grandchildren of yours, and to you renovates the image of Portuguese literature with unknown works, then it was worth it, beyond the challenge of keeping this reading and posting for all these days.
