"Cosmos de João Fernandes", Luís Filipe Leite // "Cosmos of Joao Fernandes", Luis Filipe Leite

This blog post brings the curiosity of having been written by a multifaceted "Renaissance man": the "illustrious unknown" Luis Filipe Leite was a teacher, novelist, short-story writer, miscellany-books writer, education theorist (and of reading methods, in Portugal before Joao de Deus), transltor, essay-writer and biographer. And another: unlike some works on this blog that are or at all original or rather loose adaptations, this one is simultaneously a totally original and quite similar to the previous one; this work published in feuilletons first on the Futuro ("Future") magazine under the "Saggitario" pen-name and afterwards on the Archivo Universal ("Universal Archive") magazine in 1859 has many similarities with the Jérôme Paturot (1842 feuilleton originally anonymous, published in Portugal in 1849 wrongly attributed to «Hippolyto Rolle» i.e. the theatre world journalist Hippolyte Rolle, and without any reference to translator, but in fact authored by Louis Reybaud). At last another curiosity: this text was rather well received and quite read but never passed from the pages of periodicals into proper volume on book.

The two "louises", Filipe Leite and Reybaud, and the Jérôme Paturot's supposed author Hippolyte Rolle
Already the title insinuates it so, this is another of the society "fresco" novel (the cosmos refered will have to be obviously a social cosmos and not a space one), being in this case a somewhat picaresque Bildungsroman novel like História de D. Afonso de Brás/"Story of Don Alphonse Blas" by Jose da Fonseca. Overcome that explanation, it will be better to try to appreciate the work for its specificities (the novels that give a wide-ranging view of a society not being particularly unique, let one see Os Maias/The Maias for one of the main examples in Portugal's literature, and picaresque novels also abound), and look for ways to see and analyse it more focused in its specificities. For starters, it must be noticed a certain didacticism in the writing. Unlike the (thematically) comparable) novel from the politician, journalist and writer Reybaud (an essentially satirical novel of manners that the author wanted to serve as a tableau of criticism of the economical and political system under the "July Monarchy", i.e. the French constitutional monarchy a monarquia constitucional francesa founded in 1830-35), Filipe Leite, author who had written several works in fact for younger readers (even openly for children) and who wrote many times thinking on the understanding even of not children's works for them (or were he not an author who theorised n how to teach children to read), makes a work that is "activistic" in a different way to Reybaud, being more moralising, wanting to educate the reader and adding to an ingenuity in writing a comprehensible prose in way more or less easy and somewhat coloquial and that tries to be strongly witty, as gives example of the opening «The harder lines to write in everything that not be a letter, are just two, the first and the last» (although Jérôme Paturot does not cease having a quality of moral fable, the ironic tone overrides the moralising tone). That didactivism ends by defining not only the style and tone of the book but its flow.
Ported-covers to a French edition of the Cosmos... inspirer, Jérôme Paturot
Just like the Reybaud novel, this feuilleton centers itself on a title character (in one case Paturot and here Joao Fernandes) who wants to create a position in life for himself, starting as youngun that searches through all the possible and imagined means to escape to his present occupation, the one of shirtmaker. In the case of Leite's work, the lead arrives to Lisbon awaiting to make his own luck (this is not explicitly said, but the author describes ironically as a place that seems like Portugal in everything but that that does not truly matter for the case, 'cause the language there spoken each time less does look Portuguese, and in which the city is a capital by «the mouth of one of the world's fairest rivers», what gives one pity thinking on the river's current state). The pathway that he searches for, at first, is to try to become "more interesting" through trying to give himself profile of romantic hero and "bigger than life" figure, putting himself into trying obtaining all the excentricity so that those gave him a certain public visibility. So he passes by the dandyism of follower from Romantic philosophy and aspirant poet, by hangings-ons with socialist philosophers more wordy than truly active revolutionaries (in Reybaud's French parallel, the targed was specifically santi-simonianism, the early and experimentalist utopian socialism preached by the French Count of Saint-Simon, but with the socialism in its earliest days in Portugal and more know while concept through what was read from outside, than practiced in here, the target chosen by Filipe Leite is simply called socialism, and comes-up more as philosophical trend than social experimentation tendencies and commune organisation and some philantropism), and many other mid-eighteen-hundredth excentricities.
Ilustration from the Jérôme... which shows our hero with a friend, on his dandi phase
Joao Fernandes' effort to read visibility is only partially achieved, getting some notice but that serves him more as launchpad for activities now those more lucrative for himself, as it can be seen in the work's second half, in which (as in the French equivalent) h comes-up as a mature man who already lived the first mature loves and is now settled in economically with commercial work, but right-away sees himself attracted by new calling of great success, of fast and abundant fortune and of worldly success, into active politics, under an uncle who serves him as protector (and had raised him since he lost his parents as a child and had been who had given him the desire of being «rich as a nawab»). The text is above all on vain effort, on personal ambitions and "hunger" for successes and easy profits, and so gives a kind of example in the negative reverse, of the ends that are on the contrary correct and of the healthies way to live and act. The tone of the narrative (narrated on the first person by Joao Fernandes himself, unlike the similar French novel narrated by someone who seems to have known Paturot personally, so giving Leite the idea of being, as now wiser and more moralised man recounting a less illustrated phase of his life) is so given not by a "direct preaching" of what is right but on by the counter-example of the bad and for that the novel is not "heavy" in its moralism because the plot is interesting and lets us surmise the moralisation by what tells us the plot.
A romantic embrace on an illustration from the original Jérôme...
This modest but interesting novel can be moralising and didactical, but do not think that it does not moralise and teach against the hypocritical or flabby religionism that influences much moralism and didacticism. For example, let one see the narration on the III chapter (short as all the other 13 from this "hasty" text) from his childhood and how in his traditional little hamlet in which since ancient times (in which the Church was stronger) it was usual a hick interest for Latin, giving one praises to any one who introduced some Latin terms into the conversation with or without context because that was considered a preparation for serving in aiding the priest in mass, what was taken very seriously as thing in which nobody wanted to make a fool of one's self. That despite his weak study of Latin due to that hickism about Latin, he can learn enough to excite himself with the satirical poet Horace or Roman historians (despite not getting «one metter», nice wordplay with poetic metrics, of Virgil).
Even if it might be a somewhat unfair caricature and it be forgotten the strength of faith motivation underlying to this ridiculous Latin factoid, it serves as example of the jokes and narratives that go enriching the Cosmos de João Fernandes/"Comos of Joao Fernandes" plot in itself, showing the author's talent for the episodic and the little commens, serving all to fulfill the end of making comment on one or another social flaw, pecadillo, ridiculous tiny-thing or other more condemnable thing. These characteristics may appear in quite well cared-for and person way in this Luis Filipe Leite novel, but in truth we see these broad strokes in all the literature from the 18th and 19th century, inside and outside Portugal, in the evolution of the early novella and novel, at a time-point in which western literature's vision oscillated between the enlightenment come from the 18th century, the liberalism that still came imposing itself since the ending of the previous century and the 17th century's Protestant and Counter-Reform Catholic puritanism, with the victory of one of these currents not yet definitely marked. Even today, in which leftovers of enlightenment and liberalism mark more our personal views, a text from a time of a still implementing itself liberalism and with a religious puritanism still creased, still can be a text with some strength because the former comments on the society of citizenship, of socially influential Church and of market economy that still is approximately the one from our days. Who would want to readit, will be able to find online within digitalisation of the tome I of the Archivo Universal at Google Books, being able to be read on the pages 35 to 37, 53-55, 71-73, 89-92, 106-107, 120-122, 134-136, 154-155, 170-173, 186-189, 203-204, 277-280 and 411-412 of the former. And if one feuilleton deserved to be recovered for a book of its own, this is certainly one of them.

This Classicos da literatura infanto-juvenil portuguesa // Portuguese children's/juvenile lit classics blog has brought "to the limelight" (if it is so that references in this obscure blog are bringing "to the limelight") many illustrious unknown from our literature. Now we again are going to bring along one. But for starters some words: in Portugal it is had a rather restricted view of what lierature should be. Not how good literature should be, of how literature should be. A critic defends some stylistics or others; realist, and in that case shall attack all the ones that do not reach that end, or non-realist, and shall attack all the be strictly realistic. There is a logic of not letting the writer write as one wishes and afterwards analysing its quality or lack thereof, but of defining right-away as "right" or "wrong" the writing manner or the sensibility or thematic of them, "rewarding it" or "attacking it". And affterwards, just watch: one talks of Portuguese literature and our reviewers sound somewhat like: "it is Essa sir... Camilo sir... Garrett sir... Herculano sir... Essa sir... Camilo sir... the poet Cesario Verde... Essa sir... the playwright Gil Vicente... Camilo sir... Essa sir... Camilo sir... I already said Essa sir? And Camilo sir?" Today we see that there was an immensity of writers popular on their time or few years afterward, that now got completely forgotten, not so much by that natural phenomenon of writers banal but that "fit" on a given taste from the time-point who a month later were "passés", but another one in which several writers (like Joao Correia de Oliveira, the Viscount of Moura, Joao Grave, Soeiro Pereira Gomes who seems to only be remembered in ensemble with the other neorealists or as Portuguese Communist Party icon when it is in truth rather readable isolatedly, Fernando Namora who at each decade is each time less read or known) were brilliant, but our reviewers only have capacity to "juggle" a few authors at the same time, and for more it "does not avail to".
Besides this prejudice of currents, this "disease" of "literary amnesia", and "in the end there can be only one logic" that would make the Highlander swordsmen proud, our reviewers suffer of rooted prejudices against given genres. Not only there are for them "right" and "wrong" writing ways or aesthetics, but there are "right" and "wrong" genres. So authors essentially within one or several "wrong" genres (normally called by the specialised reviewers "lesser genres"), authomatically are voted to ostracising or oblivion. Among these genres we got the detective-mystery/crime story, the fantastical or fantasy, the science fiction (these last two being able to be associated into the "fantasy and science fiction" or "science fiction and fantasy", or f and scifi/scifi and f). That was the main reason of a talented and competent author like Reinaldo Ferreira, the "Reporter X", for being essentially on detective/mystery, with some "wallowing ins" into fantasy and science fiction, getting essentially forgotten and frowned-upon. The same with adventure fiction-writers like Roussado Pinto. And when writers that are considered "worthy" enters those genres, the labour in that genre is forgotten and it is speak of as if they were "worthy" despite such labour: Saramago (aside his beginning into the neorealist literature) wrote almost all his work inside the fantasy and science fiction genre (being historic novel, O Memorial do Convento/Baltasar and Blimunda is a work with presence of the fantastical of Blimunda's sight of vision, Ensaio Sobre a Cegueira/Blindness is quite the apocalyptic science fiction scenario disguised by the barroqueness of the language and of the punctuation as 'serious allegorical book', A Jangada de Pedra/The Stone Raft is set off out of a disaster scenario worthy of science fiction but focusing itelf more in the post-disaster and in the survival and on the life assuming new normality and routine, As Intermitências da Morte/Death with Interruptions is set off out of Death taking a vacation and it ceasing to there being deaths at all, etc.), but of course that nobody refers that and disguises the zero realism of his works and his proximity to pulp science fiction works with big words like "allegory", "marvelous realism", "fabled" and comparisons with supposed works and authors that can be refered as more "respectable" influences for the Nobel awardee, because the only Portuguese Nobel Prize in Literature thus far cannot be a fantasy and science fiction Nobel awardee; and the connection of the rather respected Jose Cardoso Pires with the detective-mystery/crime story (O Delfim/The Dauphin, Balada da Praia dos Cães/Ballad of Dog's Beach, both adapted to cinema) is almost always only refered by this genre's fans. Although there be since the 1980s attempts of 'respectabilising' of he fantastical in our literary reviewers, and since the following decade to the detective-mystery/crime story, and still is being started to be done the same about our science fiction and the adventure literature, in broad strokes it still didn't come into existence major difference in the approach to these genres, and when they come-up, for example, university courses ob these, tend to be counterproductive (with self-insulting names like "Estudo de Literaturas Marginais"/"Marginal Literatures Research").
All this apropos of introducing us to another illustrious unknown who suffered not only from the change of literary fashions but out of the inhability of creation of widened canons by our literary reviewers and from his connection to "minor" genres. Jose Nunes da Mata (1849-1945; by the period's spelling "Matta") was Portuguese Republican, a navy-man, mathematician (his simplified trigonometry calculation method was applied on the France from his time' for its inovation and pacticality), MP for Castelo Branco and Viana do Castelo during the Portuguese 1st Republic and an attained writer, not being exactly a bestseller, he was rather popular and got many of his books popular with several types of audience: his mathematical books among students and mathematicians, the political ones among Republicans and varied kind activists, his poetry with the fans of the time's best poetry, his books on travels and inventions by the lovers of non-fiction literature on travels and technology, his theatre plays being performed with quite some seats-filled success and being very praised by critics from the time for their poeticness, and one work that was presented as "translation" (in truth it was work of his disguised as translation of a lost text by a relative to French historical seventeen-hundredth baloonists) was popular among Portugal's first "scientific romance" (science fiction) readers from the 20th century, História Autêntica do Planeta Marte ("Authentic History of Planet Mars", 1921).
Jose Nunes da Mata/Matta
What reasons were there to fall into oblivion? Mainly (aside all that I said above talking on many similar cases) the fact of having cut with the dominant group of Republicans and criticised massacres and factionalist acts among Republicans (like the 1921 Bloody Night, in which leftwing Republicans killed members of the rightwing Republicans then in power), and of the Republicans in relation to the Catholic and monarchist oppositions, what owed him a fall of popularity with his "fellow Republicans", and (being still a democratic Republican that at his life's end still did a "soft" civil society semi-opposition of only local impact to the Portuguese New State) are not worth popularity on him with the 2nd Republic's regime, being so more than forgotten by the time that it occured the April 25th revolution: forgotten by his "Historical Republicans", not recognised by socialists, Communist-partisans or anarcho-sindicalists as "one of their own", and was forgotten by a centre and a rightwing born anew without roots that could have picked him up as reference. Another issue was the majority of his work having been technical or mathematical (hence the only ones that still remembered him and continued to consult him vaguely were the students of university and colleges with more stacked libraries that frequently got to find one of the technical or mathematical books of his). The rest of the oblivion, was a normal dating of styles, mainly in his theatre and poetry (mainly this: it already is not read out poetry as common and normally as prose, and there being narrative or dramatic poetry almost "doing turns" as theatre, novel or short-story already is something that is not expected at all out of literature.) At last, an author tht wrote one work of science fiction, several of non-fiction that could be read almost as travel adventure works only non-fiction, and of several poetic works many times with elements of adventure or of fantasy? His work had "lesser genres" written all over it, hence was pretermitted by the critics "nice and easy".
But Portuguese literature cannot be made, like any other culture's, without memorable narratives, adventures of heroes helped by deities like Camoens' The Lusiads, narratives of the mishaps of a bourgeois society like the novel series' Comédia do Campo ("Countryside Comedy") and Comédia da Cidade ("City Comedy") by the Realist (Essa's contemporary) Teixeira de Queiroz (not relation), all the kind of legends and narratives that can recall human history, talk on its present or suggest what could be its future, and that show to the human being what he can do with its actions, for better and for worse. And Nunes da Matta's literary work serves to present us little common things in our national fictional literature: literature that is not "Bildungsroman", nationalist or sentimental. At publishing in 1916 the relatively short (in the original edition with 35 pages, in 1918 2nd one, maybe with double text columns by each page, with 19) episodic text O Sonho do Kaiser: Versos heróicos referentes à maldição do Kaiser, lançada por Deus, seu grande amigo ("The Kaiser's Dream: Heroic verses refering to the Kaiser's curse, cast by God, his great friend"; the title alone is a masterpiece), Nunes da Matta wanted to parody the beginning of World War I, at a time that Portugal was about to get into it (Portugal gets into the war that year), attributing the faults for the war's beginning to the German Emperor (or Kaiser) William II, and exposing him to ridicule, and incentivising the Portuguese to support an entry into the war from aa republican point of view (yet, here simulating a position more on democracy and republicanism, than on the main reasons of defense of the Portuguese Colonial Empire with borders with the German Colonial Empire in Angola and Mozambique, and of improving the Portuguese 1st Republic's reputation by allying it in a cause with British and French).
This narrative poem, narratd by an all-knowing narrator, shows the German Emperor sleeping after some regular tasks, and dreaming that God, his protector, strikes-up conversation with him, and as the conversation advances, the more William II is a caricature, and more God turns himself into stern teacher, and more the talk is a hard reproach to someone from whom the text passes image of being due to be perceptioned as a truant student. Nunes da Matta is not alone in that type of poetry in that time-point. Let it be seen two examples of octosyllabic decimas by the Lower-Alentejo poet contemporary to Nunes da Matta, Inocencio de Brito below:
Taken from here and from here (let it be noted that the 2nd must date from the World War's end though, by the text's content)
Nunes da Matta's poem is worth though for being more extensive, the style narrative, the style more talented and polished, so being capable of surviving reasonably to the end of the context in which it worked better, and to the exagerated propaganda tone, due to the jests and irony, by the presence of elements and language of the time that are quite curious, by an adventure environment described when God takes the Kaiser out of our world, in a kind of moment Dante's Divine Comedy style, in which more exciting moments of travel through creation are completed by others more dull merely expository and satirical nowadays that there is no Kaiser or Great War to parody (although some might want to resurrect the text by the "angle" europan anti-germanism, but I find that ridiculous, even more so that today even the left fears to talk ill of Angela Merkel now that she became the "mother of refugees"). It is clear though that Nunes da Matta, while Republican and military has a deep knowledge of the German cause on the war contemporary of his (even if affected by his politicised view of Republican and anti-Central-Powers person), for that which God say to the Kaiser and the latter say in response to God befit with the time-point's reality (for the anti-germanism and pro-belicism of the Republicans in the Portugal still neutral, of course). The effort of study of the German military actions and of their sovereign are remarkable on Nunes da Mattta's part, despite the propagandistic distortion.
For the reader that does not know much on Nunes da Matta, it is convenient to point that he wrote at a time in which Portugal oscillated between the career end of the last ultra-Romantic writers (Pinheiro Chagas and the like), the Realist or Naturalist writers, a continuity from Romanticism called neo-Romanticism (mainly under Garrett's influence, in this case called neo-garretism, and with some elements of Symbolism and Decadentism), and new currents of influence mainly Anglo-French, the Symbolism that had some aesthetic proximity from Romanticism but emphacised even more the unrealistic side and the not literal meaning of things, and th Decadentism (that in Portugal found itself frequently fused with the Symbolism) that emphasised the logic of decaying civilisation, of fin de siècle ("end of the century"), of entangling of the poet with the decadent pleasures, a certain morbid pleasure with death. So, Nunes da Matta can be seen as having drank fromall these styles, with strong Romantic and Symbolism influence, not belonging in clear way to a single one, being maybe his writing best described as intensely personal, and more influenced by a natural talent and by his political believes and by his scientific and humanist interests.
Let it be added still tha he was one of the great authors if narrative poetry, prose on travels and fantasy in Portugal, being one of the first authors of science fiction in Portugal (not the first, but one of the first to be able to be unarguably identified as such, and one of the best from the first), not properly a science fiction of predicions, but of use of elements of that genre for social commentary and proposal for social organisation model (as usual in most of the 19th century and early-20th century worldwide scifi, exception be made to Verne and Wells among few others). Nunes da Matta could well be lifted upto "Lusitanian Verne" of gandiose adventures and "early" science fiction. But we shall come back to talk of that another time. But think on it that, even if you never heard talk of him or read him, the few science fiction books, TV series or films in Portugal are Nunes da Matta's unknown "illegitimate great-great-grandchildren", and from his questions on "what shall we see when we arrive to the further beyond?", question that even in the more poetic/satirical/propagandistic/fantastical The Kaiser's Dream it arises itself. Unfortunately this book is available only on the Portugal National Library (where it is wrongly registered under the title O Sonho de Kaiser/"The Dream of Kaiser") and few more in Portugal but who be interested maybe can acquire a copy through the online-bookstore/blo Livreiro Monasticon. We still are on time of a Nunes da Matta "revival" (preferably in edition illustrating using perhaps some of the propagandistic posters, drawings and postcards from that time-point)?

"A Filha do Arcediago", Camilo Castelo Branco // "The Daughter of the Archdeacon", Camilo Castello Branco

All bodies tilt to the law of attraction (or «of attrition» as it is said comically baddly on this book's Chapter XVI). But because the bodies tilt does not mean that they fall in just any way, as it presents us example of the labours provoked by attraction's tilting in the work from this 33rd post of Clássicos da literatura infanto-juvenil portuguesa // Portuguese children's/juvenile lit classics. In the passage from the early to the mid 19th century, on the Portuguese rural north, a little-girl is born in that milieu of misery, to a mother who had her in bastardy with the Barroso region archdeacon Leonardo Taveira, and who right-away at 11 years-old the father committed her for at 14 years-old being treated as an adult (what was common at the time-point) and little afterwards to be married (what being she 11 years-old already concerns her father, thinking in the potential of marrying her and on the dowry offered by the friend mister da Silva). Without mother and without paternity and more kinship known besides the archdeacon on whose care she was, she is taken to Oporto and so raises herself on the house of the trader António José da Silva (who has for her amorous intentions), under her name of Rosa Guilhermina, name that is almost always abbreviated to Rosa and that counters in poetry the shambolic plainness of Guilhermina.
Rosa grows thus close to Oporto's Miragaia Street on an emotionally poor petite-bourgeois milieu and in terms of the means belonging to the family described, with the obese property-holder in August 1815 sweating as much from the heat as from his failed attempts of approaching the youngun to his care. Despite the growth limitations of that environment, Rosa can grow beyond her 15 years-old (which she has in 1815) in healthy way and so put up a sincere romancing with the son of the haberdasher. In this context, with aid of the young-woman's archdeacon father, the trader tries continuously to court the youngun and convincing her of the need of the planned union, and in somewhat comical way the plans of theirs are affected by said romancing with the haberdasher's son, which Rosa hide from them. The two first chapters are in fact, despite the emotionally portrayed dramatic environment, sadly comical on the portrait given on the involved parties and the way as these act in the attempt of fulfiling their aims. The church-lady misses Angelica, Antonio Jose's sister, tries to "exorcise" Rosa from being "daughter of the sin" of the archdeacon and from the romancing with the haberdasher's son, and Rosa well tries to avoid all the old-woman's dishes and drinks suspecting their holly-roller ends.
Fearing "low shames", it prepared themselves the delivering of Rosa outside the house of the trader (the latter complains directly to Joao Haberdasher on the actions, in fact fully innocent, of his son Jose Bento, provoking a big discussion among the two parties that ends the chapter V on a comical revelry with punching thrown in), and the girl is trusted to the kind lady from a monastic hostel of the local Faith-based Misericórdia welfare, meeting there and staying, among the other little-girl on the hostel, closer to a dual orphan her age called Maria Elisa (not the Portuguese reporter of course) who entered the retirement at 8 years-old. Despite friends they re not only physical contrasts, Elisa being dusky and brunette while Rosa is the usual pale typical type (although not being blonde), and the title character being apparently eternally tired while her friend is a very interventive force of nature.
Influenced by Elisa, the lead starts to find her past dialogues with Jose Bento somewhat dimmed (compared with the loves described to her by the new friend), and the haberdasher's son a dummy. To entertain herself, the as friendky as petty Elisa gives bump into her friend, making her hit in an equal way into nun that is on a fire-jumping ritual, making the nuns want to exorcise the daughter of thearchdeacon to 'take-out the evil', and while they did the preparations for the exorchism the most cultivated Elisa entertained the friend reading from the previous century's French novel on the chevalier Faublas (on a rogue full of qualities but that uses them to fulfil his vices, that fits well in Maria Elisa's own profile).
Time passes by and, as Rosa is quite compliant of the few duties that she does have and the company of Elisa prevents her from faling in despair, the attempt of the archdeacon father of punishing her for the difficulties that she put up to the planned tangling for her with a religious cloister-closure is nullified, and after few mishaps it ended being permited to her to go back to Oporto, where she settles herself with Elisa, and one day by chance she sees her being gazed from afar by her ex-boyfriend Jose Bento. Elisa asks if they could go date him (remember that till few decades ago it seems it was common in Portugal girls approaching boys to date as group, with total solidarity till he picked one and hostilities being let open) but now Rosa believes on what Elisa convinced her of about him being foolish. After Elisa "spitting venom" between both ex-sweethearts and provoking a talk of the three uncomfortable for both; nevertheless slowly the two go back to get involved with each other as before, but this development is passing, coming-up sooner or later a 2nd legal-course year student coming from Coimbra, Augusto Leite.
Augusto Leite, besies student is a translator of novellas gifted with a photographic memory, is a young fellow and with profile more of Romantic hero and due to that it is more interesting than Jose Bento for Rosa and for the reader, and so he asserts himself more on the novel and turns himself into the true male protagonist of it. Contradicting the reader's expectation, his romance with Rosa is not portrayed by Camilo as something as dramatic as the similar case of heroine with affection split by a simpler figure and by a grander one on A Rosa do Adro/"Rosa, the Churchyard's Rose" which we already saw here. Augusto is though less clashing with Rosa than the noble romantic hero from the other novel (not leaving her and not creating another love triangle like Fernando with the other Rosa from Manuel Maria Rodrigues' novel). This serves as one of the several purposes of this novel by Camilo Castello Branco: to criticise the format of the feuilleton serial in what it has of cliche and of conventional, and playing with the reader's expectations before a novel like this. So Augusto (who is also a "runt" who does not seem to have figure of great doctor) is as much a realistic figure as a faithful fulfilment of the Romantic hero model, and also a subversion of the same.
A younger Camilo, around the time of the writing of this work
Rosa is presented as the feminine but simultaneously strong woman typical to the author (Howard Hawks style) but also as kind and more naive than her friend Maria Elisa, so that her leaning towards goodness and her character make it so that some ills in the mishaps that went occuring to her and to other people around her (and on her volatile friend Maria Elisa). So she suffers some mockery from other characters, jinxs, and many of the author's metafictional jokes along the novel's text deal with the misfortunes that go down on her and how they occur. Maria Elisa ends by arguing with Rosa, and marries herself with our "acquaintance" trade Antonio Jose da Silva. After this Rosa seems to be set to "be on the shelf", what gives origin to a certain dramatism around love relations to the style of the dramatic novels (what again leads up to the author self-parodying this style of novelesque fiction which he himself practiced). But soon the "nosey" "ant" from the Bomjardim lane, Bernarda Estanqueira, is noticing that "there was estrogen in the air" about Rosa and that the latter dated seriously said student Augusto.
This opens a period of maturity and of romantic happiness in the lead, dating with the student Augusto Leite (although the relationship evolves to its pacing and apparently with some distrust and desinterest at first), while Maria Elisa (to which Rosa did not have contempt because the new love concerned her more) marries with Antonio Jose (on a Chapter XIX of ironic description, full of asides and called «drama in one act» by the author seen that it is written as a theatre play), and little after the outcome of her with a man who treats her with all tendernesses, Rosa and Augusto also gets married (Camilo ironises that two marriages is too much for one novel, expecting that the reader will not take it the wrong way although he admits that the novel quality-wise «is falling down a lot!»), but the marriage with August goes decaying more (despite there being indeed affection among the coupleand she getting along with the moter-in-law) due to Augusto's true passion, gambling. Besides this, Augusto keeps "on the side" a tricana (that is, a Coimbra area woman of peasant type) that in the Summer of Rosa and Augusto's marriage moved herself to Oporto and he promised to the tricana «a gold lace of one-hundred and sixty reales, some earings of fifty-seven dot six, twain pairs of slippers, some egg yolk colour, and other ones green-jay-tone, aside a tilma-coat in honey colour beaver-cloth», accompanying herself with him on the Coruche Street (where he setled her) a lot as well, "sistem" that worked till he began ruining himself a gambling, starting to have debts, and it is the orphan's court judge (incentivised by Antonio Jose) who acts for saving Rosa's estate, and so he does.
Little after Rosa gives birth to a little-girl that she calls Assucena and Augusto is faced with his altered state by Rosa, but each time more does sink their marriage and the estate with more bets with failed "gambling sistems", getting some helps thanks to presents from the old friends (with whom he had lost contact, as we already said) Antonio Jose e Maria Elisa. After this happened some subplots with Elisa's neighbour, Fernandes, trying to court her, Camilo comments how he would deal with Elisa's situation if he were a married or single woman (for a hillarious comparison of the author's vision on real life and the conventions of fiction for one case or the other), Maria Elisa and Rosa go back to correspond with each other, Rosa picks-up a beggar (episode which would reveal itself more meaningful than it seems), one gets to know the story of the woman and she ended begging, we know on Antonio's dramas after his wife's betrayal that meanwhile had occured becoming public, the author on a passage lists the 8 people that died in the plot so far, after this lists 13 more people die (nothing of this is described in too dramaic a way, just as things that happen in life, or in semi-realisst novels), and the plot's ending is given by 11 letters and an answered shared by an Oporto lady and a painter called Paulo (that reveal the endings of the plots of the book). Not having an exactly happy ending, the grand problems are overcome, life carries on, and it turns into past, from one generation to the other, with Assucena growing-up slender and staying behind for lead of another Camilo Castello Branco novel announced already in this book, A Neta do Arcediago/"The Archdeacon's Daughter" from 1856 (two years after the original novel, from 1854).
In the 1850s, aside its parody aims, The Daughter of the Archdeacon reveals the situation at the time-point of many orphans, of unworthy women and of many people from the liberal Portugal that ended-up victims asmuch from their own actions as from society's vices around them, even so (besides permiting some mockery with the book's self-parody aspect) showing a certain optimism (or were it not Camilo an ex-miguelist and ex-Maria-da-Fontist) before the traditional values (before the "hip" vices like the gambling that ruins Augusto) and the ethnics come with traditional spiritual believes when freed from "excretions" like fanaticism and superstitions of the nuns and church-ladies, at the same time that it describes the positive and negative effects of the separation of Church and state in liberalism's Portugal, being so the example of a good secularism as the traditionalist Camilo defended it, the approach ethical but without holy-rollings and superstition and without atheism of the character of Rosa. Although the novel does not be properly Realist and be full of metafiction in games with the readers expectations and the classic novel's tropes, but that cannot help representing people not only morally but socially with flaws and of portraying some social flaws (as when the author points that not all magistrates are upright), mainly in what concerns to the education and upbringing of the younguns and about the role of women in the time-point's society. The concern with those issues and the moral denunciation and mixture of dramatiic novelistic and that denounciation is what helped to do out of Camilo Castello Branco one of the essential authors from he Portuguese 19th century, and from Portuguese and universal lierature, like this work and Basílio Fernandes Enxertado. this work can find itself in many Portuguese libraries but not all (editions of this work are not as frequent along the 20th and 21st century aside the Europa-América publisher ones as they were on the 19th entury when almst all works by the author were bestsellers) but can find itself online at the Gutenberg Project.
